Demetri Psaltis, FELLOW SPIE California Institute of Technology Department of Electrical Engineering 1200 East California Boulevard MS 136-93 Pasadena, California 91125 Abstract. We present an overview of imaging systems that incorporate a volume hologram as one of the optical field processing elements in the system. We refer to these systems as volume holographic imaging (VHI) systems. The volume hologram is recorded just once, and the recording parameters depend on the functional requirements of the imaging system. The recording step offers great flexibility in designing applicationspecific imaging systems. We discuss how a VHI system can be configured for diverse imaging applications ranging from surface profilometry to real-time hyperspectral microscopy, and summarize recent developments in this field. © 2004 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Multidimensional Tomographic Imaging Using Volume Holography
We propose the application of volume holography to fourdimensional (4-D) spatiospectral imaging. The proposed systems use materials and techniques developed for holographic data storage and interconnections to capture three-dimensional (3-D) spatial and one-dimensional (1-D) spectral information about a remote light source or scatterer. We analyze case studies of simple architectures using sphe...
متن کاملVolume holographic pupils in ray, wave, statistical optics, and Wigner space
This thesis explores various aspects of the volume holographic pupils to better understand and implement multi–dimensional imaging. A full description and applications of volume holographic pupils are presented in ray, wave, statistical optics, and Wigner space. Volume holograms have both a shift variant nature and multiplex capability, which can efficiently extract specific information of mult...
متن کاملolume holographic imaging in transmission geometry
We address the performance of transmission geometry volume holograms as depth-selective imaging elements. We consider two simple implementations using holograms recorded with spherical and plane beams. We derive the point-spread function PSF of these systems using volume diffraction theory and use the PSF to estimate depth resolution. Furthermore, we show that appropriately designed objective o...
متن کاملLens-free optical tomographic microscope with a large imaging volume on a chip.
We present a lens-free optical tomographic microscope, which enables imaging a large volume of approximately 15 mm(3) on a chip, with a spatial resolution of < 1 μm × < 1 μm × < 3 μm in x, y and z dimensions, respectively. In this lens-free tomography modality, the sample is placed directly on a digital sensor array with, e.g., ≤ 4 mm distance to its active area. A partially coherent light sour...
متن کاملQualitative demonstration of spectral diversity filtering using spherical beam volume holograms.
We investigate the feasibility of designing spectral diversity filters using spherical beam volume holograms. Our experimental results qualitatively show the separation of the information of different incident wavelength channels using spherical beam volume holograms. The major trade-off in using these holograms is between the degree of spatial spectral diversity and the number of allowed spati...

We report on a volume holographic imaging spectrometer (VHIS) system which allows retrieval of a scene's twodimensional spatial information as well as its spectral information. This is performed using a transmission volume hologram and a simple rotary scanning mechanism. The system has the advantages of high spectral and spatial resolutions and the potential of single-shot, four-dimensional (3D...
